What Compassion measures

Compassion is about which instinct fires first when needs collide: smoothing things over or naming what's true. Some people lead with warmth and read cooperation as the smart default. Others lead with candor and won't soften a fact to keep a moment comfortable. Both are honest ways to treat people, and a room usually needs some of each.
High Compassion
Warm
You give people the benefit of the doubt before the side-eye, and in a tense room you hunt for the version where everyone's a little right. You'll quietly absorb a small cost to keep things from going hard. People relax around you, because they can feel you're on their side.
Low Compassion
Direct
You say the thing the room is dancing around instead of waiting for someone braver. Being liked doesn't move you the way being right does, so you give the inconvenient fact straight while everyone else softens it. People learn your yes is real, because you'd have said no if you meant it.
